ScenePro support degree research into e-Scooter rider safety

July 14, 2025

When approached by Dan Jarvis, a Forensic Collision Investigator from Leicestershire Police, who was undertaking research into the riding safety of e-Scooters for his BSc (Hons) in Forensic Road Collision Investigation – we jumped at the chance to support the technical aspects with our new CI 200 SVTS - our application specific Small Vehicle Testing System.

Dan’s thesis focuses upon the impact training can have to improve rider skills in emergency braking situations. We don’t think we are giving away any spoilers here – it conclusively demonstrates that practical rider training in braking improved their deceleration rate by an average of 13% to 19% on the a variety of e-Scooters.

Our CI 2000 SVTS model is specifically designed for measuring all performance data relating to smaller vehicles, including motorcycles, micro-mobility and all transportation categories ranging from golf carts to small delivery vehicles and TukTuk.

Dan’s final report ‘Evaluating the Emergency Braking Abilities of Novice e-Scooter Riders: A Comparative Study of Training Impact’ has supported him earning his Honours Degree and has been published in Impact - The Journal of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators, Summer 2025 Volume 33 No. 2.

Dan hopes his research might influence policy makers to look at training for scooter riders and that his data will be used by professionals when investigating road traffic collisions involving e-Scooters.

We have already learned Dan has being invited to present his findings at conferences in the EU. We have read Dan’s study and its findings and conclusions are a must read for his target audience.
